Grades 3 and 4 were thrilled to welcome very special canine visitors and their handlers from the Rutger’s Chapter of Merlin’s Kids, a non profit organization that rescues and rehabilitates shelter dogs into service dogs. Service dogs are not considered pets but are actually working animals. When you see a service dog wearing a bright red vest with ‘Service Dog’ written on both sides, it is a sign that they are working. Once out of the vest, the dogs may be petted.
We had two service dogs visit us, Peanut and Sierra. Peanut and Sierra stole our hearts with their playful eyes. The students had a great time interacting with the service dogs. We learned that these service dogs are great companions for autistic kids, veterans, and many a times they calm down even toddlers! The service dogs stayed very attentive and formal as long as they were in their vest. Once the vest was removed, they were playful with their handlers. Some students petted the dogs while others read to them. Both dogs and students enjoyed the interaction. What a fantastic experience for the third and fourth graders!
