Grade 8 students at CHP experienced a rare treat on Wednesday, March 14th. Merck Pharmaceutical Bio-Engineer, Tinh Nguyen DeMary, brought a medical 3-D printer from his science laboratory to show students how the medical research field is using 3-D printers in research medicines for testing in 3-D cell grown membranes for effectiveness and damage. In addition, Mr. DeMary demonstrated how cancer drugs are tested on tumor cells outside the body on special 3-D printed substrates. Students were educated as to how organs and body parts are grown from cells on substrates for body repair of injuries, disease destruction, and malformations. Real samples were put in their hands for hands-on discovery.
The future is now! Excitement from the students filled the Science room of teachers Steve DeChiaro, Denise Galiano, and Olivier Merot. Indeed, the future of Science Engineering is awaiting these young stars. Thank you Mr. DeMary and Merck for such a rare treat from the Labs of Science Research and Bio-Engineering.
