Grade 3 Mystery Readers

Grade 3 Mystery Reader

On Friday November 20th in the morning, third grade had a mystery reader…it was Chrystal’s mom!  She read us an entertaining story called “The Little Match Girl Fairy Tale.”  On a freezing New Year’s Eve, a poor young girl, shivering and barefoot, tries to sell matches in the street. Afraid to go home because her father will beat her for failing to sell any matches, she huddles in the angle between two houses and lights matches to warm herself.  One message that this story holds is that we should not underestimate the power of one’s mind and imagination. The little girl was physically freezing but was able to transport herself to a hopeful and warm place with the visions in her head.

On Friday November 20th in the afternoon, third grade had our second mystery reader of the day…it was Reyaan’s mom!  She read a story entitled “The Name Jar.”  The Name Jar explores questions about difference, identity, and cultural assimilation.  When Unhei, a young Korean girl, moves to America with her family and arrives at a new school, she begins to wonder if she should also choose a new name.  Her classmates suggest Daisy, Miranda, Lex and more, but nothing seems to fit.  Does she need an American name?  How will she choose?  And what should she do about her Korean name?  This story presented a great message about individuality and taking pride in ourselves.
