To wrap up their lessons on materials and properties, and the affects of heating and cooling on materials, 2nd graders made applesauce! Each child brought in an apple and charted the properties of apples, water, and cinnamon. They made a mixture and charted the mixture’s properties. Then, the ingredients were heated in a slow cooker in the classroom. The applesauce was examined (…and tasted!) and its properties were recorded. In addition to enjoying the tasty treat and its sweet aroma, 2nd graders observed the science in cooking first hand! Now that the children know the correct steps to make applesauce, they can apply this knowledge in Language Arts as they write “How To” books of their own.
