For Earth Day Grade 1 discussed the Amazon RainForest in which the Kapok tree grows and is home to many plants and animals. They discussed the delicate balance of humans and animals. The children enjoyed watching tree climbing in Brazil, and listening to the read aloud story, The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. The children placed the events in order and described the message of each animal. This story has such potential for heightening the awareness of how important we work together to protect the earth and inhabitants! The first graders certainly appreciated the message.
