6th Grade Social Studies Learn about Early Humans

Mrs. Callahan’s 6th Grade Social Studies class was busy the month of Sept. learning aboutearly humans. We also examined how historians study artifacts and documents from the past. As part of that study we learned about treasures of the past like the cave painting found in Lascaux, France. These ancient cave paintings provide clues about what life was like in prehistoric times. These painting show the kinds of animals that roamed the Earth and what methods people used to hunt them.

Each student choose an animal and created a cave painting that looked similar to the ones discovered in France. Students used various oil pastels and craft paper to create the cave paintings. They also told a story about their painting from the point of view of the cave person. The students took great pride in their finished work. The stories the students wrote were excellent examples of first person point of view. The entire 6th grade thoroughly enjoyed this interactive project which combined history, art and creative writing.
